Good Parenting Skills
Good parenting skills can be learned. Ultimately our aim is to bring up children to be all that they were created by God to be.
In order to mature into responsible and loving adults children need a combination of acceptance and discipline. These will help them to develop self control and self esteem.
Disciplining should not be done in anger. The goal is that the child learn and choose the better path in future. This will teach them self control and provide them security that there is someone who cares about every aspect of their life. They are not alone. You are with them. It is difficult to dicipline but we need to be consistent about this - not wait till the last straw.
Acceptance of the child includes appreciating his/ her efforts and person. Cuddling, playing together, spending time together all contribute to building the child's self-esteem. It communicates that the child is loved and his/ her existence is important.
It is viatal that we spend quality and quantity time with our children. Our availability will ensure we are quickly alerted to teaching moments. It will also help build the child's confidence that they have someone to come to when they are in need or when they want to share a joyful moment.
